Social Media Effects on Culture

Technology has advanced daily activities through mass media and changed society’s culture. According to EduBlogs, “social media increased the connections between people and created an environment in which you can share your opinions, pictures and lots of stuff. Social media improved creativity and social awareness for our society by interacting with other people and sharing new ideas and opinions” (Kerem, 2016). To further, the way that humans can connect and interaction with each other on social level provides “an opportunity to widen your world and make new friends from other countries. It is easier to learn about breaking news on social media because it has unlimited access and flexibility” (Kerem, 2016). Ultimately, connection via social media has made human connection manageable and flexible.

Using platforms such as Facebook enable content necessary for virtual connection using like, share, and comment features. As mentioned in previous work, “almost three-quarters (73%) of users of the social network Facebook, use it as a way to get news, compared to 71% of Twitter and 62% of Reddit”, Facebook continues to provide the content that communicators are looking for (Suciu, 2019). The amount of news that is shared on Facebook is 9.6% of the overall postings that include friends and family at 70%, advertisements at 10.4% and other non-news related content at around 10%. Other sources mention, “more than 50% of these users live outside of the United States”, indicating how large the global reach is for Facebook and Instagram (Grandinetti, 2020).
